How does your Sports Medicine specialty inform your interaction with patients?
It’s normal for patients to present their musculoskeletal ailments to a primary-care physician. But if the doctor either lacks specific training, a comfort level or the time required to address the ailment, often he or she will refer out to a specialist.
On the contrary, I feel my sports-medicine fellowship allows me to effectively treat patients because I can more accurately assess musculoskeletal issues. I can also provide customized, cutting-edge treatments like regenerative medicine. For example, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy.
What does your relationship with the Lightning mean to you?
This is my third year with the team. Most sports medicine physicians have career aspirations to work with a professional team but never realize that dream. I consider myself one of the fortunate few, and I don’t take it for granted. The Lightning includes people of such high character that I have no doubt there isn’t a better-run organization in all of sports.
What about the concierge-medicine model appeals to you the most?
It’s refreshing. I’ve operated in the traditional model for eight years now. I’m accustomed to hospital, billing and insurance oversight dictating how much time I can spend with someone, how many patients I have to see and what I can and can’t order for the patient.
I look forward to finally sitting down with patients to have real conversations and collaborating on how to keep them in optimal physical and mental health. I look forward to meaningful relationships. Concierge medicine is the way medicine should be.
What’s life like outside of work?
I spend as much time as I can with my wife and our baby. I don’t want to miss a second. I also love staying physically active. I go to the gym, play basketball, enjoy water sports like boating and fishing. I try to spend as much time outdoors as I can. I actually spend a ton of time in the kitchen cooking with my beautiful wife. We like to travel and try amazing foods. She’s turned me into a foodie!
